First Gorgon LNG Shipment Departs Australia

A major milestone has been reached in Australia’s offshore energy and shipping sector with the first shipment of LNG from the Gorgon project off the north coast of Western Australia sailing on the LNG tanker Asia Excellence earlier this week. The buyer of the cargo is Chubu Electric Power in Japan.

The initial shipment of LNG has been some time coming as it was originally anticipated for late 2014 after five years of construction work, but construction delays pushed back the start-up date.

Gorgon is the largest single resources project undertaken in Australia’s history involving over 8,000 construction workers at its peak in both the massive onshore and offshore infrastructure project. Most buyers of Gorgon LNG are in the Asia-Pacific region with the project anticipated to last up to four decades.

The Gorgon project is a joint venture between Chevron, ExxonMobile and Royal Dutch Shell.
