John is a Partner at Hicksons and leads the Property, Planning & Construction team. He identifies opportunities for growth while strategically driving the practice to align to client needs and market changes.
A dynamic and hands-on practice manager, John ensures that his knowledge and expertise of more than 30 years focuses on guiding client relationship activities and provides certainty and protection through the delivery of quality legal services.
In his role as Managing Partner for 17 years, John was instrumental in positioning the firm to its current state, including the repositioning of the business into the professional services hub of Sydney’s Barangaroo precinct, guiding a workspace strategy where team members work flexibly through space optimisation, paper minimisation, smart technology and open innovation – all of which promotes stronger client serviceability.
John has also worked in commercial matters involving capital raising and private equity funding. He has travelled to China and been part of a multidisciplinary team advising Chinese nationals and companies on establishing a corporate arm of their businesses in Australia.
His experience spans commercial, insurance and property matters alongside commercial disputes resolution, mediation and arbitration.
He has represented clients in a range of commercial litigation matters, including trade practices issues, contractual disputes and statutory interpretation.
John is currently a board member of several organisations. He has a deep and practical knowledge of the workings in and around the boardroom.
Holding a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws, John began with the firm in 1983 and was appointed to managing partner in 2003.
He is admitted to practice in NSW, the ACT, Victoria, Queensland and the High Court of Australia.
