Careers Summer Clerk Program

Summer Clerk Program

Hicksons will not be participating in a Summer Clerk Program for 2015/2016

Our Summer Clerkship program operates on a rotation system, ensuring successful applications gain exposure to several practice areas. The positions typically involve one month of work, mid November to mid December, and then a second month, mid January to mid February.

Our Summer Clerks will experience two rotations of four weeks each, receiving direct access to our partners and associates, superior coaching and mentoring. Successful Summer Clerks will be offered graduate positions. Each Summer Clerk has a buddy for the program. We provide on the job training and each Summer Clerk is supervised by an Associate who provides feedback and guidance.

We encourage our Summer Clerks to stay in contact with the firm as we like to be able to offer them, where possible, paralegal work in their final year of university legal studies. They would be highly considered for graduate roles on completition of their degree.

The following testimonials are from summer clerks who have been through our program

"Participating in the 2012/13 Summer Clerkship program at Hicksons was a very rewarding experience. I felt genuinely welcomed and supported by everyone I encountered right to up to and including the Managing Partner. The two rotations I completed, in the workplace relations and commercial dispute resolution practices, provided an ideal vantage point to consider the type of law I’d like to practice. In both rotations the supervising partners took care to ensure I had a mix of practical hands on work and opportunities to observe the running of matters. This included drafting advices to clients, completing research tasks, assisting with interviews of clients at their premises, attending directions hearings, settlement conferences and mediations, and even making a supervised appearance before the District Court. The Hicksons Summer Clerkship Program was a great experience that I would highly recommend to anyone in their penultimate year of law."

"My time as a Summer Clerk during the summer of 2011/12 was a fantastic experience and one that saw me introduced to the practical side of the law within an incredibly friendly and supportive environment. Throughout my two rotations I was assigned real and hands on tasks that enabled me to gain valuable and practical legal experience. I was also fortunate to be able to attend Court a number of times as well as mediation which I really enjoyed. I was not merely treated as the 'summer clerk', but a valued member of the team. I was welcome to attend all firm social functions. All Hicksons staff, including my supervising partners and assigned 'buddy' were incredibly approachable and happy to assist me in any way possible. I never felt out of place or in the way, but a respected and contributing member of the firm. I would highly recommend that all penultimate year law students apply for a summer clerk position with Hicksons."

I was one of the four fortunate to be selected for the 2011/12 summer clerkship program at Hicksons. From the onset I was given practical, hands-on experience in two rotations of the firm's practice groups. I was given a great level of responsibility in all the work I carried out. I completed research, advices and letters, and reviewed and drafted contracts. Under supervision I attended court, mediations and arbitrations where I was able to observe the  dispute resolution process close up. I felt that I was solving real problems and contributing to helping each matter move forward. All this was made possible by the great mentoring by my supervising partners and the buddy program. At all times I felt like I was part of the team, which is a testament to the firm's tight knit culture. The size of the firm lends itself to a great diversity of work, reputable clients and exposed me to new areas of the law that I had never considered. Hard work aside, the firm has a great social ethos. I was welcomed to the firm's netball team and enjoyed getting to know everyone at Friday night drinks. All my clerkship at Hicksons was an invaluable experience and the ideal kick-start to my career."
