Careers Summer Clerk Program

Summer Clerk Program

Hicksons Summer Clerk Program for 2010/2011 has closed.

Our Summer Clerkship program operates on a rotation system, ensuring successful applications gain exposure to several practice areas. The positions typically involve one month of work, mid November to mid December, and then a second month, mid January to mid February.

Our Summer Clerks will experience two rotations of four weeks each, receiving direct access to our partners and associates, superior coaching and mentoring. Successful Summer Clerks will be offered graduate positions. Each Summer Clerk has a buddy for the program. We provide on the job training and each Summer Clerk is supervised by an Associate who provides feedback and guidance.

We encourage our Summer Clerks to stay in contact with the firm as we like to be able to offer them, where possible, paralegal work in their final year of university legal studies. They would be highly considered for graduate roles on completition of their degree.

The following testimonials are from current lawyers in our firm.

"I consider myself very fortunate in my role as a graduate solicitor at Hicksons. It was apparent from the first day that I arrived that the firm has a solid foundation of team work and take an active role in training young practitioners. I have found the opportunity to work in diverse areas of practice both rewarding and challenging. Under the guidance of my very approachable Partner and fantastic Associates, my first six months at Hicksons have been an incredibly hands on experience that I know will serve me well as I progress throughout my legal career. The social aspects of the firm are also to be marvelled. Hicksons has an incredible culture in which everybody is encouraged to participate in "everything and anything". This ranges from touch football and soccer to Friday night drinks and casual dress days, as well as actively participating in various charitable events and fundraisers. The social committee works very hard in creating a pleasant and friendly working environment fostered by strong mentoring and career progression. Overall a fantastic place to work!"

“The 2010 Summer Clerkship program at Hicksons was the ideal kick start to my future in the field of law. I had the opportunity to meet highly respected and experienced professionals from various areas of legal practice and to learn crucial skills that will assist me throughout my career. The energetic environment and the friendly staff make Hicksons a great place to work, especially as a beginner. The workload was diverse and challenging and I was always able to receive guidance and feedback from my assigned buddies. The Summer Clerkship program has opened my eyes to areas of practice I had not previously considered and I recommend it to any Law student who is determined to gain valuable hands-on experience in a reputable firm.”

“I completed my clerkship at Hicksons over the summer of 2010-2011 and was fortunate enough to be given hands-on, practical work from day one. Over the course of my two rotations I was treated like part of the team and given the opportunity to meet with clients and attend court on a regular basis. I even flew to Queensland for a day to attend part of a bedside hearing normally held at the Dust Diseases Tribunal.  Everyone at Hicksons looks out for each other and I appreciated that senior personnel were approachable, friendly and provided excellent guidance. Working as a paralegal during my final year of university has enabled me to build upon the skills I developed as a summer clerk and I can honestly say that there is nowhere else I would rather be working.  Hicksons has a genuine commitment to helping employees maintain a work-life balance and everyone is welcome to join the sporting teams and attend social events, which showcase a cohesive, social and fun culture where everybody is included.”
